Okay, let’s talk about decluttering your life and your closet.
We’re talking about this on two completely different spectrum’s today. Let’s start with decluttering your life.
The other day, I was chatting with one of my good friends. You know, pondering life, talking about the people in our lives, work, blog, future goals, etc. And he said something interesting to me. He said, “I’m going to start cutting certain people out of my life.” He went on to say how there are some negative people in his life and how there needs to be a change.
This led me to think about decluttering. Because it isn’t just about cleaning out your closet…
It’s also about cutting certain people from your life as you grow. Harsh, I know. But that’s what decluttering your life is all about.
At a certain age you start to realize your worth and how some people don’t actually deserve your time and energy. Because even being in the same room as them can bring your energy levels down. Know those people? They always have something negative to say. They’re always complaining about something. And never thankful for what they have. These people are toxic. Your mission in life should be, to be happy and positive for the most part. Toxic people will only add to your misery.
Thankfully, I’ve realized this earlier on in my life, and therefore have a very, very small circle of the most amazing, non-toxic, positive friends.
Here’s what I’ve realized. I would rather have a handful of friends who are honest and REAL with me, than a large number of friends who will smile to my face and then talk behind my back when I’m gone. No thanks, I don’t have time for that.
And you shouldn’t either. You can usually tell who the fake one are. Sometimes you hold onto those fake ones for whatever reason, hoping they will change. However, there will come a point in your life where you will realize that they’re no long needed. That they never were. And you’ll cut them out.
And it will feel great.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Have quality people in your life. It’s NOT about quantity. No one cares how many Facebook friends you have. They’re not your actual friends, dude. In fact, you should also declutter your Facebook friends.
Point is, don’t bother keeping negative people in your life. Surround yourself with great people, and you’ll be happier.
Okay, to lighten the mood, let’s talk about decluttering your closet.
Because summer is in fully swing, and we need to get organized. This means, saying a (short) goodbye to our sweaters, faux fur vests, and ultimately making room for maxi dresses and crop tops.
Who else is a TOTAL hoarder when it comes to their wardrobes? I’m the actual worst when it comes to decluttering. So bad, that in fact my best friend needs to physically be there to talk me into donating my clothing. (I’m much better at decluttering my life than my closet, if we’re being honest).
Don’t get me wrong, I love to donate. But when it comes to my clothing, I feel like every piece has a story. Every dress has a meaning behind it. And every pair of shoe has been through a journey with me. LOL.
ANYWAY.
Over the years of my best friend having to hold me down and snatch clothing right out of my hands, I feel like I’ve come a long way since then. I feel like I’ve gotten wayyy better at deciding what needs to stay and what needs to go. I mean, sometimes I still need a little push, but I’m getting there.
Now that I’ve moved into a condo, closet space is a bitch. I need Mr. Big in my life to build me a Carrie closet…
But for now, the two small closets will have to do. Which is a good thing, because every season (ish) I HAVE to declutter.
Here are my tips:
1) Keep the Classics:
You know, the white blouses, the little black dress, the boyfriend blazer, and the perfect skinny jeans. Those all need a home forever. I mean, I actually spend a bit of money on the classics, I’m not giving away those so easily.
2) Ask yourself these questions:
– When did I wear this last?
– Will I ever wear this again?
– Do I need to be a certain weight to wear this and feel good in it?
Based on your answers, make a logical decision.
3) Donate the clothes you don’t need:
At least you’re doing a good deed! This will instantly make you feel better. I know that I feel a whole lot better that I’m giving my clothing to those who probably need it more than I do.
4) Grab a bestie for moral support:
But not like anyone. You need someone that can literally tell you that “you look like shit in that dress.” LOL. Because that’s what my bestie did. And boy, did it ever work. HAHA. Real friends for the win, because the last thing you need is someone telling you, you look gorgeous in that dress, when you don’t…
How do you guys declutter your closet. And your life? Do you reflect on that often? Share in the comments.

+Here’s a post on how to be a Badass Boss Babe. Check it out.
I'm so bad with keeping wrong people in my life. I hold on to everybody and I hope things will change (magically). I'm mostly surrounded by great people and I kinda know who to avoid, but there's always a part of me that just won't give up :/
decluttering closet is also hard cause I'm sentimental and, like you, I have a story behind every outfit haha
btw, dress looks great!!

Great post! Keeping the classics has kept my wardrobe alive and saved me a ton of money!
Thanks for your comment, Honey! I know what you mean about keeping people in your life, even thought you know it's time to let go. I've been through that, and there comes a point when you'll decide it's time to let go. 🙂
Totally, Brittany! Love, LOVE classic pieces. The older I get, the more I invest ONLY in the classic pieces. xo
Put all your hangers backwards
When you wear something turn the hanger towards you and see how many hangers have moved in 6 months! This is a big clue on what you really love.
Time to donate!
OMG That is a great idea!! Thank you!
