4 LIFE LESSONS I’VE LEARNT THIS YEAR.

LIFE LESSONS

Wow !! Another year has gone by. Every year for my birthday I like to do a little reflection post. So, this year I’m doing 4 life lessons that I think are super important. It’s been one heck of a year, and I wanted to share some thoughts.

If you missed past year reflections, catch them here, here, & here.

Okay, let’s get into this post.

4 LIFE LESSONS I’VE LEARNT THIS YEAR:

{ The people you give & receive energy from are very important }

…so choose wisely.

Since the pandemic hit, I’ve noticed SO much negativity around – the media, social media platforms, people being super judgy – and I just cannot handle it anymore.

There are people who have lost their jobs, are lonely, stressed out, scared, have anxiety, and so much more, and there will still be the Judge Judy’s of the world just waiting for someone to do something wrong, to speak out on it. I’ve seen it happen SO much on Instagram, and it’s something that totally needs to stop.

Instead of coming down on someone in a negative way, try a more positive approach instead. I love Instagram and all social media platforms, and I’ve always used The Chic Confidential as a positive space, but lately I’ve seen so many Influencers being super negative and preachy on their space. It’s really got to stop.

I don’t have the time for negative energy anymore. I want to create a life full of positivity and hope. If something or someone is stressing you out or causing a negative impact on your life, do yourself a favour and cut it out.

I read this quote, which I wanted to share:

“Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. So when someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Believe me. You’ll be happier.”

Watching the news can also be very stressful and negative. I get that we need to be educated on what’s going on in the world, but maybe not first thing in the morning. You want to set the tone for your day, and I noticed that if I start reading the news first thing in the morning, my whole day is off. You know?

Anyway, major life lesson #1 – give and receive good energy always. This can totally affect your mental state.

LIFE LESSONS

{ nothing goes as planned }

I mean, we’re literally living through a pandemic right now…

Shit happens. Plans change. You can’t control what happens but you can control how you react accordingly.

Every bride that was supposed to get married this year now knows that nothing goes as planned. And my heart really goes out to each of them. But this is a life lesson, and we gotta roll with it.

I get it, the total disappointment when things don’t go the way you planned.

You can plan, plan, plan all you want. Planning is an essential part of life. It helps centre our mind and create focus so our action is intentional and not off the cuff.

Andrew and I have been at a total stand still for wedding planning. We got engaged last August, and were supposed to be planning a wedding this year. The pandemic happened, and we’ve had to put everything on hold.

Nothing goes as planned…and that’s okay.

We have to learn to roll with the punches and not stress out at everything that doesn’t go our way. There have been a few other things that haven’t gone according to plan this year, but we’ve learned to accept that that is life.

If you dwell on it, you’ll stress yourself out even more.

I’m a problem solver. I’m not a problem dweller (if that makes any sense). And that may come easy to me with my profession in event planning – you learn to fix problems REAL FAST.

Learn to accept that life isn’t always going to go the way you planned.

{ speak up }

Another major life lesson learnt this year is to speak up when you think something’s not right (but not in a negative way). Learn to use your words to educate in a positive way.

We’ve seen A LOT of conversation around everything that’s transpired over the last month, which is a good thing. Yes, there was some negative conversations as well, but for the most part, positive conversation was everywhere.

If you think something is not right, speak up. Don’t be silenced. You may get negative backlash, but you may get even more support. You just never know. Take a chance and speak up if you want.

LIFE LESSONS

{ my faith keeps me going }

I’ve spoken about my faith on the blog before, but never in too much depth. I’m not the type of person to go around telling people what to believe and what not to believe. The last thing I ever want to be is preachy. It’s much of a turn off for me.

But I always like to share what works for me on here, and you can either take it or leave it. Something that has always helped my mental health and well-being is my Faith. Since Covid happened, I wasn’t able to go for weekly Sunday masses, however, thankfully with technology I was able to join in service online. Which has been a blessing.

My Sunday mornings are very specific. I love a good, relaxed Sunday morning to ease my way into the week. And having that hour dedicated to my Faith is very, very important to me. It keeps my mental health in check, and is a good way to stop and think about the things you are grateful for.

Whether you pray, meditate, take a moment of silence for yourself, or just have some alone time, I believe it’s truly important for our minds and a good reminder to be thankful.

The last life lesson that I want to mention is enjoy the small things in life. I won’t go into much detail here, because we’ve all heard this in the past. But REALLY stop and be grateful for the tiniest things in your life. Here’s what I’m thankful for this week:

  • Espressos on the weekends
  • Hot weather
  • My Nanz
  • My super peaceful balcony
  • Celebrating my birthday with Andrew, my best friend, & my family.
  • MY HEALTH.

What are you thankful for this week? Tell me in the comments, and/or write it in a journal. I love a gratitude journal.

Xx, kim
