S E L F-C A R E.
Two words we’ve heard a lot in 2018. I’ve even wrote a post on what self-care is really about, in 2018.
Are you doing enough for yourself? Are you taking care of your mental health? What are you doing to make yourself happy everyday?
These are the kinds of questions we need to ask ourselves daily to check in. Toxic relationships need to end. Social media stalking – why though? Comparing yourself to others – are you not good enough?
Let’s make 2019 even more about self-care and self-love. We need it.
There were far too many deaths involving mental illness in 2018. A few to people I knew. Taking your life at a young age, or even thinking about suicide when you have your whole life ahead of you is a scary thing. A thing we want less of in 2019. Let’s pay more attention to ourselves, our loved ones, our friends, our acquaintances and even those we don’t know.
Let’s notice the quiet girl on the bus. Or the homeless man who smiles at you on your way to work. Let’s genuinely ask people “how are you doing?” instead of just saying it in passing. Let’s be kind to the person behind the counter who makes our coffee everyday. And let’s smile at more people.
With that said, here are some tips for 2019 self-care/self-love:
Invest in your hobbies
What do you LOVE to do? Think about things that truly make you happy. Think about when you were younger. What made you smile? Was it baking with your family? Was it blasting music and dancing in the kitchen? Was it reading for hours in a quite space? Did you ever want to take a class? Or join a sports team? Whatever that hobby was/is, do more of it. Do more of what makes you happy. For me it’s blogging. I love to sit and write. I love to create.
Learn to cook a few healthy meals
Healthy meals is the start of a healthy lifestyle. There’s more to a healthy lifestyle than just healthy meals, however, start there. Pick up a gourmet cookbook or browse the internet for some easy, healthy meals. Over the last several years I have completely eliminated some terrible ingredients from my cooking, and mannnn it feels good! I am a avid podcast listener (check out the ones I listen to here) and I’ve learned SO much about nutrition from listening to them every single morning. Start with one or two healthy meals, and from there you will want to explore even more!
Regular journaling
This is something I used to do, and kind of stopped due to having no time. But we all know that’s just a dumb excuse. We can always make time for things we want to do. (Here are my tips for effective time management) Journaling is something we should all do if we have a mind that doesn’t stop. Keep a little journal in your bag or by your bedside. Make sure it’s cute. 😉 And whenever you’re feeling heavy (not literally) just spill the beans in your journal. We ALL used to have diaries as little kids. I had like 4…They were all pink and sparkly. Obviously. So why not continue the trend? When we were younger we wrote about boys we liked or didn’t like. Now we have adult problems, so why not journal that? Right??
At the start of 2019 I picked up a notebook at Homesense. Light pink, spiral edged, lined paper, and a pen that writes veryyy smoothly. It’s ALL in the pen. And I’ve started doing something called The Morning Pages. Where every single morning you have to write three pages of whatever is on your mind. Except I do it at night. More on this in a blog post I’m writing. Don’t worry, I will get very specific.
Stretch every morning and night
This is SO my New Year’s resolution. First I will journal, then I will stretch. Who is with me?! Again, self-care is about taking care of not only your mind, but also your body. We sleep for 8(ish) hours a night. This means, we’re barely moving for 8 WHOLE HOURS! So naturally we should be stretching in the mornings! This is SUCH an obvious thing, but so many of us don’t do it. Me included! Anyway, this year I’m focusing a lot of my energy into stretching AM and PM, and taking really good care of my body. Which also means hitting the gym more often.
Take care of your skin (with more natural ingredients)
I mean, come on guys! I can’t preach MORE about the importance of your skin. Like, if you’re not taking care of your skin in 2019, I don’t know what else to tell you. Get more facials, do more masks, ice roll, jade roll, and take your damn make-up off before you sleep. Make time for your skin. Seriously, your wrinkle-free skin will thank you in 10 years. I promise. Less make-up, more skincare.
Keep a clean home
Honestly, who else feels like they can take over the world when their home is clean? Please tell me I’m not the only psycho out there that feels this way. This is another way of self-care, let me tell you. A clutter-free home is good for the soul. And mind. I have SO much anxiety when shit is everywhere. Andrew knows this, because when there is clutter everywhere, I get super annoying. LOL. I need to have a clean kitchen before I go to bed. You know?

Learn to calendar
Like, manage your time wisely. I get it, there isn’t enough time in the day to do everything. But like, stop scrolling through Instagram and start organizing your calendar. You will actually see you have a TON of time (that you’ve been wasting). Plug EVERYTHING into your calendar – appointments, driving time, gym, cooking, cleaning, emails, even scrolling through Instagram. LOL. This way you give yourself an approximate cut-off time and you don’t end up scrolling for hours. And therefore, you’ll have more time for other things. Things like reading, cooking, stretching, journaling…
You get it.
Anyway, those are my tips. Like I said, we need to self-care more these days. And I want to make 2019 ALL about that. Not just for me, but for you guys too.
Ok – what are some tips I’m missing? Share in the comment what YOU do to self-care. Because maybe we need to get on that too, you know.
Sharing is caring. Especially on The Chic Confidential.
K, I’m off to watch an episode of Schitt’s Creek and then journal.
Oh, I’m also reading a new book called Then She Was Gone. Kind of a murder mystery-ish book. Pretty good so far!
Xx, kim
