How’s everyone doing? I hope we ALL enjoyed the sunshine over the weekend. I sure did. Honestly, winter felt toooo long. I can finally feel that spring is in the air.
What did you guys get up to over the weekend?? Mine consisted of a weekend FULL OF LOVE. My best friend, Victoria, who you guys should all know very well, got engaged! She’s the photographer behind The Chic Confidential if you don’t know her. Anyway, she’s sporting quite the rock on her finger. I couldn’t be happier for both of them!! Let the wedding planning begin!
I also attended another friend’s wedding shower, which was just so lovely. Beautiful brides everywhere, make me smile.
Anyway!! Let’s dive right into the point of this post.
Because it’s an important one for us ALL. I’m sharing 9 foods that I always keep in my fridge. They’re all super healthy, and you should stock up too.
Ready? Let’s go.
Lemons are KEY in my fridge. I drink a glass of lemon water every single morning, thanks to my bff, Victoria (the recently engaged one) for getting me on this. With all the flus, colds, and coughs that are constantly going around, no matter what season it is, I like to chug lemon water and get in my Vitamin C. Aside from Vitamin C, there are a billion other health benefits. But that’s another post on it’s own. It’s also really good to drink water before you drink your coffee in the morning, and drinking lemon water as soon as you wake up just get’s all your insides moving.
I legit make myself guac once a week! Avocados are not only fucking delicious, but they’re also SO healthy. They’re full of potassium and magnesium, which is great for a healthy heart and immune system. Be a “basic bitch” and make your avo-toast. Maybe just don’t Instagram it from every angle. I also love it with my eggs in the morning.
Mmmmm, but who doesn’t LOVE cheese?! I will eat just about ANY kind of cheese. I love feta or goat cheese on my salads, cheddar on toast or crackers, parmigiano on pasta, swiss, brie, etc. I can go on forever, because I love them all. Especially with a side of wine. If you were following me on Insta a couple weekends ago, then you would’ve seen Andrew and I with wine, cheese, and garlic stuffed olives…in bed. Raging Friday night! Anyways, cheese is a good source of calcium, so get that in!
I mean, I’m not sure I love anything more than I love garlic. I DO NOT cook without it. It’s stocked to the maxxxx. The health benefits are ENDLESS, really. And if I’m being real, I eat raw garlic straight out of the shell. (Don’t mind my breath). If you feel a sickness coming on, step away from the Tylenols and Advils. Instead, pop some garlic. It’s an anti-oxidant so put garlic in everything! Actually, when I’m sick, to boost up my immune system, I cut thin slices of apple, pour a tiny bit of honey over it, and put some garlic in between two of these apple slices. Basically an apple, honey & garlic sandwich! SO YUM. Trust me on this one. Actually, trust Lauren Conrad, because I’m pretty sure she created this concoction.
Sesame, flax, hemp, chia, sunflower! I like to call them magic seeds. Because really, they are MAGIC. They’re a good source of fibre, protein, omega-3, good for a healthy heart, lowers cholesterol, reduces blood sugar, etc. What I like to do is mix them all up together, and sprinkle them on my salad. You can also throw these over a stir-fry or add them to your avo-toast 😉
Blueberries and raspberries are my favourite!! To be very honest, I have to really force myself to eat fruits. I’m not huge on that. I love my veggies, but I suck at eating fruits. However, I do love berries. I can eat a box of blueberries in a sitting. And a lot of the times, I do. Again, these are packed with anti-oxidants, fibre, and anti-cancer properties. Throw them in yogurt, salads, or just eat them plain. SO YUM.
When it comes to salads, I NEED arugula to dominate. I’m not a fan of lettuce leaves. I just feel like they have no nutrients, so why would I eat something with NO health benefits? Sure, it’s low in calories, but if it’s not benefiting me in someway, I’m not into it. Arugula, kale, & spinach for the WIN in my salads. Arugula has a bit of a bitter taste to it, and filed with iron, potassium, magnesium and calcium.
Fave salad: Hand full of arugula & spinach, magic seeds, cucumber, chunks of feta cheese, thinly slices onions, olives, and homemade dressing. I’m drooling.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil:
I ALWAYS have a good bottle of EVOO imported from Italy in my kitchen cabinet. When choosing a good bottle of olive oil, you’ll see the word “pure” on it a lot. That’s just a good marketing word. Always get Extra Virgin – it’s the highest grade for olive oil. Also, never get a bottle that says “refined olive oil” on it. That just means it’s been processed with solvents to mask off flavours. A good bottle of olive oil will smell amazing, and taste good with just plain bread.
…a little spicy and stuffed with garlic if we’re being specific. I mean, it really is the perfect snack. Olives do contain fat, but it’s the healthy, monounsaturated kind, which increases good cholesterol. I always have some in my fridge for when I’m feeling peckish.
Okay, so there it is. Guys, I’m being serious when I saw that these items never run out. Like if I even get close to running out, I panic. Like, full on “WHERE ARE THE LEMONSSSS???”
I just make sure I never get low.
